Uniting Indiana's Campus Community to Promote Green Policy and Practice

Just wondering what schools are offering programs that involve green initiatives. If yours does please let me know, or if you think yours should let me know what kinda program you are thinking about.

I attend IU Northwest which is located in Gary. My campus is located near the mills and many other manufacturing facilities, including the BP refinery. On our campus we have recycling bins for many products but not all. The recycling that are located throughout campus are usually not convenient or full or missing. It seems as if recycling is not a huge priority. It seems to me that with all the other issues we have in our area our school would be focused on maintaining a healthy environment for the future and current students.

Located atop one of our buildings we have a GreenHouse. It is not large by any means but it is a work in progress. It would be great to see a GreenHouse or something close to it on all our rooftops. I know Chicago has implemented a "Green" plan for the rooftops and it would be nice to see Northwest Indiana take part in this initiative.

Also, located just norht of our main parking lot we have a river and it's overflow area. I'm sure some of you have heard about our recent flooding and what has happened. Our campus flooded resulting in the loss of one of our buildings and our campus being closed for all events for several weeks. This was and is a huge hassle for the students and the staff. For those of us living in that area we are aware that this event is more likely than not going to happen again. Our campus was built on the flood plain of the neighboring river. It's really frustrating to everyone.

Our campus is involved in preserving the flood plain surrending our campus. We have native plants that are well taken of and all foreign plants are removed. This is a beautiful idea but when it floods, everything floods. I am not entirely sure who is in charge of taking care of this field but I know that do an excellent job. It's just too bad there aren't more areas in Northwest Indiana that are taking the initiative to preserve the native plants.

There is a website for my campus: http://www.iun.edu/

However, navigating it can be a hassle at times. I would suggest finding some time to browse and go over all of our programs.

At Powershift this weekend I was talking with some students from other universities around Indiana and it seemed one thing we all wanted was a green fee. I met a guy from University of Oregon as well; his university hasd a green fee implemented. Here's something explaining it:

Hi,

I think each and every school should do it. We have a green program in our school.
