A new article published on March 20, 2009 states that global warming is happening even faster than it was predicted to happen in 2007. Sea levels are rising faster, artic ice is melting more rapidly, and the forests are being transformed. The article states “that some people and species around the globe are already experiencing global warming impacts that could be deemed “dangerous”.
Complete melting of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet would cause 16 feet of sea level rise globally, and it would expose the US to even more. A new study shows that if the West Antarctic ice Sheet collapses, the resulting changes in the gravitational pull would cause add another 4.3 feet of potential sea level rise along the northern continents.
Higher temperatures and tree mortality have led to a rapid increase in western wildfires. Warmer springs and longer summer dry periods are linked to a 4-fold increase in the number of major wildfires and a 6-fold increase in the area of forest burned, compared with wildfires between 1970and 1986. The loss of these forests not only stops their conversion of carbon dioxide to oxygen and wood products, but also releases the huge quantities of carbon they store into the atmosphere.
Another major concern of the ice melting is the amounts of methane gas that are trapped in the ice sheets and along the ocean floor. If these gases are released it could increase the amount of methane gas that is already in the atmosphere by 100 to 200 times. The extent of this methane gas being released has not yet been fully discovered.
